I couldn’t think of a better artist to invite to help us commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Cowling Arboretum, Carleton College’s 800-acre green space, than Alec Soth. He captured imagery for the front and back cover of the fall issue of the Voice, a story about how the Arb is used by faculty, and a photo feature called “Happy Place,” that honors the staff, faculty, and students who care for this land.
The issue also features: a foldout guide to the Indigenous medicinal plants in the arboretum (with art by Holly Young and text by Ida Downwind), memories of the space by 10 alumni over the decades (including one by a woman who raised her siblings in a farm house in the woods after her parents passed), a “Round Robin” between three generations of ornithologists, Tim Gihring’s look at another side of the Arb (think: sex, drugs, and druids), and more.
